We've been shaping light for more than a century, evolving alongside architecture itself. From early functional fixtures to today's advanced architectural systems, our history reflects an ongoing dialogue between design and human experience. We're proud of where we've come from, and even more excited about where we're going!

Our History

Founded

Three European brothers arrive in America with a dream to invent – to design for innovation. They create the company and choose the name “Peerless” because it’s a “good American name.”

Early Years

The brothers focus on “design for innovation”, with electric lighting being that innovation. In the coming years, they will hold more than 50 patents between them.

Growth Era

Peerless establishes a strong commercial presence across major U.S. cities and enters its next chapter under Samuel Herst. The company expands into distribution and begins manufacturing custom architectural lighting. Inventors to the core, the company held a number of patents.

Performance

Architectural integration and strong visual performance become defining characteristics, including the introduction of the Outrigger series, the company's first patented indirect luminaire. As post-war construction accelerates, production scales to serve schools, offices, and industry, with a focus on visual comfort and human experience.

Human-Centered

Peerless brings a design-forward, architectural mindset rooted in accessibility and human-centered principles. This decade marks a generational shift toward design as a core value.

The brand evolves its portfolio to align with contemporary architecture, creating luminaires for designers and specifiers. The company expands into task/ambient lighting systems and, in 1977, submits its first patent for a lensed indirect lighting system. In 1985, the Peerless® Lighting rebrand reinforces a focus on research, sustainability, and people-centered design.
